ubi Christus, ibi ecclesia

That is what the church should be like. Its unity comes not from organization, or ritual, or liturgy, or worship. Its unity comes from Christ. In the Latin phrase ‘ubi Christus, ibi ecclesia’ – Where Christ is, there is the Church. The church will only realize her unity when she realizes that she does not exist to propagate the point of view of any body of men (or women), but to give a home and a dwelling-place where the Spirit of Christ can dwell, and where all men (and women) who love Christ can meet in that Spirit.

William Barclay on Ephesians 2:11-22
